Questions and answers
Is this the CO2Stats that ran from 2007 to 2017?
It is the same address with a new owner, who has no connection to the original team. The about page tells the original site’s story, criticism included, and what has changed.
When can I check my website?
The website carbon checker is being rebuilt and will open in a later release. The methodology sets out how it will measure a page, so you can see the method before any result.
My site still has the old CO2Stats badge script. Is it doing anything?
No. Requests to the old badge scripts get an empty answer with nothing in it, so the script does nothing on your page and no badge appears. You can remove it whenever you like. The about page explains what the old badge was.
What happened to the old “Green Certified Site” certificates?
They ended when the original service closed in 2017, and none is valid. Old certificate links now say so. A new, free badge, CO2Stats Verified, will come with the checker: it describes one page, states measured facts with a date, and expires unless the page is checked again. The methodology has its rules.
What does “verified green” mean here?
Only that the Green Web Foundation lists the host in its directory of verified green providers, on the date we checked, which we show beside it. It is not our judgement of the host, and it says nothing about any one website’s footprint. The green hosting guide shows each host’s listing, the grids where its data centres are, and its own evidence.
Do hosting companies pay to be listed or ranked?
No. Hosts are listed alphabetically. Some links to hosts may become affiliate links, which earn us a commission; each is marked, with an explanation above the first one on the page, and none decides which hosts we list, their order, or what we say about them. See the editorial policy.
Does this site use cookies or track me?
No cookies, no advertising, no trackers, and nothing loaded from other websites. The privacy page has the detail.
Where do the figures come from?
Atmospheric CO2 comes from NOAA’s Mauna Loa records and, for the long view, the ice-core composite NOAA publishes; country emissions from Our World in Data; grid carbon intensity from Ember; hosting listings from the Green Web Foundation. Every page names its sources and dates. The Kettle Question’s figures each come from a named claim in its ledger.
Can I use your charts and data?
Yes. Each chart on the CO2 pages downloads as an image with its title, source and licence in the frame, and has an embed code. Our graphics are licensed CC BY 4.0, and the data keep their sources’ terms. The Kettle ledger downloads as CSV and JSON under CC BY 4.0 for our compilation, with each figure credited to its source: see the ledger’s data page.
I think something here is wrong. What do I do?
Write to hello@co2stats.com with what and where. The editorial policy says how we correct mistakes and show changed figures.
