CO2 in the air

Carbon dioxide in the air is measured in parts per million (ppm). Since March 1958 it has been measured continuously at Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, first by Charles David Keeling of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and since 1974 by NOAA as well.

The latest reading

426.07 ppm

The average for September 2026, measured at Mauna Loa in Hawaii.

Compared with a year before
September 2026 was 1.70 ppm higher than September 2025.
The highest month so far
432.34 ppm, in May 2026.

Source: NOAA, as of 16 October 2026.

The Keeling curve

Each point is one month's mean. The line rises and falls every year as northern forests grow in summer and shed leaves in winter, and climbs underneath that as fossil fuels are burned.

CO2 at Mauna Loa, 1958 to 2026

Monthly mean CO2 at Mauna Loa rose from 315.71 ppm in March 1958 to 426.07 ppm in September 2026, rising and falling with the seasons each year. The annual mean first passed 400 ppm in 2015. The highest monthly mean so far is 432.34 ppm, in May 2026.

800,000 years

Bubbles of old air trapped in Antarctic ice record CO2 for the last 800,000 years. The ice-core record ends in 1958 and the Mauna Loa measurements carry on from 1959; the dashed line marks where one gives way to the other.

800,000 years of CO2: Antarctic ice cores (Bereiter et al. 2015, NOAA NCEI) joined to Mauna Loa in 1959

For 800,000 years before the industrial era, ice cores show CO2 between 174 and 299 ppm, rising and falling with the ice ages. Measured directly at Mauna Loa, the annual mean was 316 ppm in 1959 and 427 ppm in 2025.
