Questions and answers
Is this the CO2Stats that ran from 2007 to 2017?
It is the same address with a new owner, who has no connection to the original team. The about page tells the original site’s story, criticism included.
How do I check my website?
Enter the address of a page on the home page. The checker loads it in a real browser and shows what it weighs, an estimate of the carbon each visit causes, and what would make it lighter. Results are public. The methodology has the detail.
My site still has the old CO2Stats badge script. Is it doing anything?
No. The old badge scripts now get an empty answer, so nothing appears on your page. You can remove it whenever you like. The about page explains the old badge.
What happened to the old “Green Certified Site” certificates?
They ended when the original service closed in 2017. None is valid. The new, free badge, CO2Stats Verified, states measured facts about one page, with a date: check a page, and ask for it from the result. The methodology has its rules.
What does “verified green” mean here?
The Green Web Foundation lists the host as running on green energy, on the date we show beside it. The green hosting guide ranks the hosts.
Do hosting companies pay to be listed or ranked?
No. Hosts are ranked by one rule: verified green first, then the cleaner grid where their data centres are. Some links to hosts are affiliate links that earn us a commission. Each is marked, and none changes which hosts we list or their order. See the editorial policy.
Does this site use cookies or track me?
No cookies, no advertising and no trackers. The privacy page has the detail.
Where do the figures come from?
CO2 in the air from NOAA (Mauna Loa and the ice cores). Country emissions from Our World in Data. Grid carbon from Ember. Green hosting listings from the Green Web Foundation. The Kettle Question’s figures from the claims in its ledger.
Can I use your charts and data?
Yes, with a credit and a link. Each chart on the CO2 pages downloads as an image and has an embed code (CC BY 4.0). The Kettle ledger downloads as CSV and JSON from its data page.
I think something here is wrong. What do I do?
Write to hello@co2stats.com with what and where. The editorial policy says how we correct mistakes.
